 Programme Overview 

The SHSM Environment Program allows students to customize their high school experience to prepare for a future in environment related careers.

 Why SHSM? 

 Who Would Be Interested? 

The SHSM Environment Program will give students the opportunity to:

  • See the connections between their high school studies and the real world;

  • Be exposed to various trades and technologies involved in the environment sector;

  • Observe, work in, and develop environment-related skills;

  • Complete approved Dual Credits

  • Make informed decisions for a future in an environment focussed career.

 The SHSM Environment Program will be beneficial for 

 students who: 

  • Like to work with their hands and apply the theoretical aspects of courses;

  • Enjoy complex and challenging problem situations;

  • Want sector-recognised certification training;

  • Want a sector-specific high school program leading to a high school diploma with a that provincially recognises their achievement.

 How Do I Register? 

Students can obtain an application from Student Services.

  • All applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance into the program.

  • No prerequisite is required to enter the program.

 Development of Skills & Work Habits 

Students will develop a work plan using the Ontario Skills Passport developed by Human Resources and Social Development Canada.   

Using the Ontario Skills Passport, students will track the development of Essential Skills – literacy, numeracy, thinking skills and work habits, as they transition from high school to their post-secondary destination.

Optional:

  • Global Information System (GIS);

  • Species Identification;

  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card;

  • Water Quality Analysis & Assessment;

  • Wilderness First Aid;

  • Wilderness Survival;

  • Habitat Restoration;

  • Bronze Cross / Medallion / NLS;

  • Project Wild / Below Zero;

  • Ontario Hunter Education.

 Recognised Certification/Training 

All sector-recognised training is delivered by a certified trainer and includes an assessment and evaluation component. Students receive a certification or proof of completion as evidence of their skill and qualifications.

Compulsory:

  • Global Positioning System (GPS);

  • Standard First Aid;

  • CPR;

  • WHMIS.

 Reach Ahead Experiences 

Planned activities connect with student's post-secondary pathway include:

  • Job shadowing / twinning;

  • Visits to a College and/or University;

  • Visits to environmental businesses and/or

  • various ecosystems.

 Experiential Learning 

Planned activities outside of the classroom setting within the environment sector:

  • Co-operative education: 1 to 2 work experiences within an environment industry;

  •  Job shadowing / twinning;

  •  Tour of environmental businesses and/or ecological settings, (e.g. Halton Waste Management Sites, Black Creek, ice fishing, etc.);

  •  Attendance at a trade show, conference and/or job fair, (e.g. Outdoor Adventure Show, etc.)
